The Cultural Heritage direction with the School of Archaeology was established on the basis of archaeological research, and developed through professional teaching of archaeology, cultural relics and museology. In 2005, Professor Li Yiping opened the first cultural heritage course “World Cultural Heritage”. In 2006, the program began to recruit postgraduate students; in 2008, it recruited doctoral students. In November 2010, the Cultural Heritage Protection Research Center of Jilin University was established, with Professor Zhao Binfu as the Director. In 2014, the Cultural Heritage Protection Research Center of Jilin University was selected as the key research base of humanities and social sciences of Jilin Province. In June 2018, the School of Archaeology of Jilin University was established and the Department of Cultural Heritage was also established, which greatly supported the construction of the “six in one” overall system of JLU. Based on the applied professional characteristics of cultural relics and museology, the Department of Cultural Heritage is divided into two research directions: cultural heritage management and cultural heritage protection technology. The Department of Cultural Heritage consists of 8 faculty (3 part-timers and 1 re-employed), 5 professors, 2 associate professors, and 1 lecturer. Among them, 7 are qualified to recruit master candidates and 4 are qualified to recruit doctoral candidates.

The faculty regards cultural heritage as the research object, combining the disciplinary foundations of archaeology, museology, chemistry, and art design. The mission is to protect cultural heritage, and serves the local society as an important task. The faculty has carried out multi-disciplinary and multi-method systematic research, and finally formed a series of high-level academic papers and consulting reports on cultural heritage protection, museum theory and practical research. It has also cultivated high-quality talents in the application field of cultural heritage protection and museums, building a regional characteristic cultural development model and cultural brand. At present, the Department of Cultural Heritage has basically formed an integrated model of “research, training, and serving the society”.
